Training Leaders, Serving Communities, Building Futures
The mission of YouthBuild Atlanta is to empower youth to be leaders in the Atlanta community through education, job training, volunteer service and leadership development activities. The program aims to provide students with a safe environment that will allow them to work towards their educational and career goals while simultaneously transforming them into community leaders. Through the 10 month program, students will gain the skills and training that will help them to rebuild their lives and develop a positive work ethic, a lifelong love of learning and a sense of responsibility for themselves, their families and the community.
As an affiliated member of YouthBuild USA, YouthBuild Atlanta assists young people between the ages of 16 and 24 years old who did not finish high school. The program follows the national YouthBuild model of providing concrete services for students in five core areas:
Through a combination of hands-on activities, one-on-one tutoring, and computer-based learning modules, students are prepared to successfully pass all subject areas of the 2014 GED test. YouthBuild Atlanta has centered its educational component around the belief that encouragement, love, support, and hands-on learning will strengthen the students’ dedication to learning and pave the way to their success.
YouthBuild Atlanta students receive certification from the Home Builders Institute: Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate Training. Students receive hands-on construction training through renovations and new construction of homes for low income families. Students also receive Young Worker Safety & Health Training, OSHA 10 certification, as well as CPR and First Aid trainings.
YouthBuild Atlanta students also participate in various workshops and seminars centered on mastery of the national YouthBuild Leadership Competencies. Additionally, students are provided opportunities throughout the program to sharpen their leadership skills by being elected to the Student Policy Council, representing the program in Washington D.C. at the YouthBuild USA Conference of Young Leaders, and volunteering with community agencies.
Guided by the holistic approach of the YouthBuild philosophy, the personal growth and development of our young people is a central focus for YouthBuild Atlanta. As many students deal with “life” issues that can distract them from their goals, the program offers supportive services through peer counseling, individual and group sessions, support groups, one-on-one case management, and referrals to a network of partner agencies to help overcome life’s obstacles.
Preparing students for their next step in life is a critical element of the YouthBuild program. All graduates receive assistance in obtaining employment or enrolling in post-secondary education soon after graduation. Students participate in regular job and college fairs, college tours, job shadow activities, and short term internships to prepare them for their graduate placement.
